Looking for a Designer/Illustrator

It’s getting toward the summer festival season, which for Comhaltas tends to be the busy part of the year. One thing that I thought we might do this year is put some thought into t-shirts and other Comhaltas-branded stuff. I’ve seen a lot of designs by local branches - everything from simple logos to complicated line art. And while we often sell t-shirts at the Fleadh Cheoil, our designs seldom go beyond just the logo.

So, here’s the call to action: if any of you Irish music lovers or members of the Comhaltas community feel moved to contribute some original artwork that you think would work well for t-shirts, mugs, wall clocks — anything, really — I’d love to put your design on some stuff, with appropriate credit given. I know, it’s not necessarily fair to ask creative professionals to donate their stuff … it’s like saying to a doctor at a cocktail party, “Hi. I’m having this pain…”. But it’s a way to help the cause, and I know that Comhaltas has some really talented people out there. So, if you feel like contributing, well, send me an email at brendan@comhaltas.ie. Thanks!

You can pay for web site development but not illustration? Let me guess - you will pay the printer and also score a profit.

Actually, I was going to put the stuff up at cafepress.com at cost price, so that we don’t have to pay upfront for printing and we also don’t make a profit.

If I had a particular project in mind, sure, I’d pay an illustrator. My idea for t-shirts (and maybe it wasn’t well thought-out) was more just about getting some designs out there that are a little less boring!

I think it’s a lovely opportunity for the community to participate in a collaborative creative effort and, honestly, some of the best t-shirt designs are not by “creative professionals”.  Please don’t get me started on this “I’m a designer” crap.  Anyone can design a t-shirt and yes, with an organisation such as this I do think it’s fair to ask Breandan and don’t be ashamed of that.  If anyone’s to be ashamed, it’s Bob for his superficial way of thinking.

And you know what?  Even if Comhaltas did make a profit well more power to them because they bloody deserve it.  What they’ve done for me in terms of inspiration and encouragement is worth far more.

A great idea.  The CCÉ wearables are boring design.  Usually the street vendors doing knock-offs are better designed and sell well.

There is another important detail.  No matter how well designed, Tshirts we purchase in Ireland generally shrink at least 1-2 sizes are paper thin and tight around the neck.  Upgrade the quality of the wearables, especially tshirts and people will pay for comfort and design quality.
