Last weekend the traditional music world lost one of its greatest musical personalities when Clare concertina player, Sonny Murray went to his eternal reward. This Blog consists of some brief thoughts on Sonny’s life as outlined during his funeral mass in Ennis Cathedral on Monday, 16th November.

The North American Concert Tour which visits 10 Canadian cities during October 2009 is now in full swing. The Comhaltas Concert Tour group featuring veteran Cork singer, Seán Ó Sé plus top Irish traditional musicians and dancers, started out in Shannon, Quebec with an exciting show of traditional Irish music, song and dance. It’s now blazing a trail through Eastern Canada winding up in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Saturday, 10th October.

Come and join musicians from all over Clare in what will be a very memorable Fleadh in the North Clare town of Kilfenora. In 2009 the town celebrates not only the re-establishment of a very vibrant Branch of Comhaltas but also the centenary of the founding of the world renowned Kilfenora Céilí Band in 1909! See members of this legendary céilí band on Wednesday night in Linnane’s Bar and also again on Saturday night where they will provide music for dancers in the Community Hall.

- Fleadh Nua Concerts - Hurry to avoid disappointment!!!

The Kilfenora Céilí Band have done it again! Their National Concert Hall performance in March was sold out and all tickets for their Fleadh Nua Centenary concert in Glór are now also sold. Some tickets are still left, however, for the Wednesday night Chieftains concert in Ennis Cathedral and these can be booked on-line over the Internet.

- KILFENORA CÉILÍ BAND CENTENARY FESTIVAL

All roads lead to the North Clare village of Kilfenora on Thursday, 23rd April for the start of a unique event in Irish music and social history. A festival has been organized in conjunction with the local branch of Comhaltas to run from 23rd to 26th April celebrating the centenary of the world-renowned Kilfenora Céilí Band.

Dunamaise Arts Centre is delighted to present a very special offer for members of Laois Comhaltas for a magnificent show by the group FIDIL, presented by Music Network, which will take place on Wednesday, March 11th at 8pm. FIDIL are Ciarán Ó Maonaigh, Aidan O’Donnell and Damien McGeehan who were awarded a place in 2008 on Young Musicwide, Music Network’s development programme for selected young professional musicians.

- Ennis Under Siege for Fleadh Nua

Fleadh Nua kicks off with a record breaking Siege of Ennis on Sunday, 17th May. Cork set a world record In September, 2005 when 8,371 dancers danced the Siege of Ennis for 5 minutes continuously. Fleadh Nua (appropriately in Ennis), in conjunction with the Special Olympics, expects to break this record.
To motivate the dancers (if this were necessary in the Banner County) music will be provided by Clare’s own Kilfenora Céilí Band.

Macalla na hÉireann, the 2008 Comhaltas Concert Tour of Ireland visited 14 venues between the 12th and 25th of October. The annual Tour featured the best of traditional talent drawn from all four Provinces of Ireland.

Singer Seán Ó Sé from Cork headed up the exciting 2008 Irish Traditional Concert Tour of North America. The Comhaltas group, which included some of the top Irish traditional musicians, singers and dancers, visited nine North American venues during the two week October Concert Tour.

What a combination in this the first concert of the Leinster Fleadh on Monday, 7th July in the Mill Theatre, Dundrum Town Centre! Performers include top class traditional veterans, Cork’s Seán Ó Sé (Singer), Cavan’s Martin Donohoe (Accordion) and Seamus Fay Lilter. Guests include Clare’s Padraic O’Reilly (Piano) and Kavan Donohoe from Cavan on Harp.

- Dundrum Traditional Concert

A great concert of music, song and dance takes place in the Mill Theatre, Dundrum on Thursday night, 10th July. The concert is presented by Dublin’s Craobh Chualann branch of Comhaltas and stars Bruce Scott (Liverpools renowned singer/songwriter) and Niamh Parsons. A large contingent of talented musicians and dancers from the Chualann Branch will also provide top class entertainment on the night.

The concert was be followed by a lively traditional session in the bar.
