Brú na Sí Winter Concert Series

Craobh Eochaill CCÉ, with the support of the Meitheal initiative, are delighted to launch a new winter concert series at their purpose built Teach Cheoil, Brú na Sí.

Ceolta Sí, the performing unit of Craobh Eochaill CCÉ and the resident performers at Brú na Sí, recently completed an intensive summer season when they performed three nights each week to full and enthusiastic audiences. The younger musicians of the Youghal branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann who are involved in the Lár na Cruinne group also performed at Brú na Sí through the summer and are currently preparing for a trip to their sister group, Craobh Amergin na Gael, in Wales.

The Brú na Sí Winter Concert series will run in tandem with a workshop programme allowing young musicians in east Cork access to training with the best musicians in the country. The programme is being run with the support of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann under the Meitheal initiative and is part of the forward thinking of the local branch. The workshops are a vital element in the development of provisions for music education in east Cork. Students will receive valuable training in specific instruments and performance skills.

The first artist is a young concertina player from a renowned musical family. Caitlín Nic Gabhann comes from Ashbourne, Co.Meath and is currently studying music at University College Cork. Her main musical influence has been her father, Antoin Mac Gabhann. She started concertina with Riona Traynor (RIP) and later learned from Meabh Ni Lochlainn. Caitlín has won many prizes at Fleadhanna Cheoil both in solo and group competitions with Ashbourne CCÉ. She is also an accomplished step-dancer and has toured extensively both as a musician and dancer. She is currently a member of the group Crinniú who released their debut album Live in Corofin in 2006.

The series will continue in November with Tommie Cunniffe, who recently performed a number of events at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Tommie firmly established himself as one of the country’s leading accordion players with his debut album unbuttoned. Siobhán Long of the Irish Times stated

“If the only measure of a box player is his contribution to the traditional canon, then Tommie Cunniffe’s solo debut will earn him pole position in the traditional music firmament…Cunniffe’s distinctive driving, rhythmic style promises a hellraiser on the live front.”

Other artists who will feature in the coming months include Aoife Granville who recently released her debut album Sráid Eoin Shuffle and Christy Leahy of the band North Cregg whose fourth album The Roseland Barndance was also recently released.
