The Ardchomhairle of Comhaltas, meeting in Dublin at the weekend, awarded Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2014 to Sligo.
Following a comprehensive – and exhaustive – campaign, it was decided at lunchtime today, Saturday, that Sligo’s bid had been successful, and therefore, for the first time since 1991, the world’s greatest traditional Irish music festival returns to Sligo. Speaking following the announcement, Chair of the Sligo Fleadh Cheoil committee, Bartley Gavin, said: “This is wonderful news not only for the traditional Irish music community in Sligo, but for the region as a whole. We have worked hard to ensure that the Fleadh would come back to Sligo, and we are thankful to the Ard Chomhairle of Comhaltas for their decision to award the Fleadh Cheoil to Sligo in 2014.”
Sligo County Manager Hubert Kearns congratulated the Fred Finn Branch in Sligo on their successful Fleadh application. “This is a great moment for the county, it will help to promote Sligo’s cultural heritage and we look forward to welcoming many visitors to Sligo for the Fleadh Cheoil next year.” There was very keen competition for the Fleadh with two other strong contenders in Drogheda and Ennis. This year’s Fleadh is in Derry - the first time in the 60 years history of the event that it will be held in Northern Ireland in conjunction with the UK city of culture.
The All-Ireland Fleadh attracts up to 300,000 people; generates €40m for the local region and will have 10,000 performers. Comhaltas has designated 2013 as “Bliain na Cruinne”, celebrating those who promoted the cultural traditions of Ireland worldwide. Comhaltas pays tribute to all Fleadh applicants, highlighting their exceptional volunteerism and professionalism.
