The County Derry Fleadh is coming to Derry City this year. Fleadh Dhoire which is being hosted by the Derry City Comhaltas Branch takes places from 14th – 18th April. The main events will take place in Culturlann Uí Chanáin the city’s leading Cultural Centre. Over the five days of the Fleadh there will be competitions in music, singing, dancing and language, as well as concerts, ceili, language events, and inormal sessions throughout the week-end.
The Derry City Comhaltas branch was formed in 1972 and continues to go from strength promoting traditional music and culture in the city. They organise a range of traditional music events including regular classes in traditional music, song and dance. The branch have been working hard to develop a Festivals strategy to attract a number of Fleadhanna to the city including the All-Ireland Fleadh Ceol. Although mainly a competitive event, the Fleadh provides a platform and a meeting place for the many musicians who carry on the great tradition of promoting traditional music and culture. Fleadh events also bring many benefits to the community, and are great social occassions, raising the moral of the local community and attracting visitors. The County Fleadh has been hosted in Derry city previously as was the Ulster Fleadh. As a city renowned for music and culture it is fitting location for such cultural events. The organising branch, Derry City CCE are working hard to ensure this will be a hugely successful event and a great weekend of traditional music and would like to thank their sponsors and funders for their encouragement and support.
