ALL ROADS LEAD TO DROMORE!!
The picturesque village of Dromore in County Tyrone will be alive with music, culture and history this midsummer. The Tyrone County Fleadh will once again be hosted by the Dromore Branch of Comhaltas, taking place between the 19th and the 21st of June in the village.
Two years ago the Dromore Branch hosted the Fleadh Ceol in the neighbouring village of Trillick. But this year it returns to its original homestead of Dromore where it was first held in 1970. There will be plenty going on in the village with a great range of events organised to celebrate the rich traditions of music, culture and local history which all the communities of the county can be so justly proud of.
Recently within Comhaltas, the expansion of fleadhanna is being strongly encouraged and assisted under the Meitheal initiative and this support was again music to the ears of the local committee who were eager to incorporate added events designed to put a multi-cultural ‘stamp’ on the event representing the new demographic of the area. Traditionally the Tyrone Fleadh is known as one of the best Fleadh’s in the country and is a weekend that is always marked in diaries or calendars in anticipation of the treat that invariably lies in store amongst traditional music enthusiasts and indeed those casual listeners in search of some good traditional entertainment.
Events will begin on Thursday evening with a talk by local historian Pat McDonnell and an Old Time Dance with music by Peter & Harry. On Friday, one of the highlights of this year’s Fleadh will include a great opening night street concert hosted by Micky Harte, a multicultural parade through the town, celebrating our cultural diversity and showcasing Irish, Ulster Scots, European music, dance and a vintage car, tractor and motorcycle parade, Céilí’s, Dances and Street entertainers. The traditional music competitions will take place in St John’s Business and Enterprise College on Saturday, starting at 10.00am. This year’s Fleadh Ceol Tyrone is sure to be a truly unique event, warmly welcoming all sections of the community.
Anyone wishing to enter one of the competitions at a County Fleadh Cheoil must submit their entry form to the Fleadh Secretary not later than 21 days before the Fleadh date. Entry forms can be downloaded from the Comhaltas website.
Information on Fleadh Rules is also available from the Comhaltas website.
