The Ballymote Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann was formed in November 1956. Ballymote is in South Sligo - an area steeped in traditional music and culture. Even local townland names resonate with names of tunes,eg, The Hill of Knocknashee, The Keash Jig, The Templehouse Reel. Our treasurer Michael Hurley and also our PRO, Fiona Doherty teach music throughout the area and both have a keen insight and knowledge of the Sligo repetoire and style . We have recently inaugurated the Paddy Killoran Traditional Festival to commemorate Paddy Killoran’s wonderful style of fiddle playing. Paddy was born a half mile from Ballymote town and his many recordings have left a lasting legacy . The Paddy Killoran Trad Festival is held on the 3rd weekend in June, in Ballymote Co. Sligo. Other recent branch activities - Ballymote welcomed competitors, performers and spectators from all parts of Connacht for Fleadh Chonnacht 2011 , June 27th - July 3rd, 2011. Many thanks to the members of the Connacht Council, Sligo County Board, Ballymote Business Association and all who contributed, financially and otherwise, to a very successful Connacht Fleadh.
