This week we present music from the 2007 North America Comhaltas Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.

00:00 A selection of reels: “The Plough and the Stars”, “Belharbour” and “Vincent Broderick’s” played by three musicians living in Toronto. They are: Ena O’Brien (button accordion), originally from Co. Galway, Denis Lyons (banjo), originally from Belfast and Kevin Finnegan (flute), a member of the Liverpool Céilí Band for a number of years and hailing from Co. Leitrim.
06:17 From Windsor, Ontario, Frank Edgley is the manufacturer of the famous Edgley Concertina which is played in many parts of the world, particularly USA, Japan, Indonesia and (of course) Ireland. Frank, whose maternal grandmother Bridget Reynolds came from Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim, plays a selection of reels commencing with “Connemara Stockings”.
09:43 Another selection of reels from one of the many sessions at the Comhaltas Convention in Atlanta 2007. Introduced by concert flute player Tom Madden from New Jersey, the other musicians are: Paul Wells (flute) from Tennessee, Sally Summers Smith (fiddle) from Boston, John Reynolds (fiddle) and Margie Mulvihill Reynolds (flute) from Pearl River, New York. They play “The Caucus Reel” and “The Torn Jacket”.

14:59 The group Fingal formed in 2006 consists of three of the best-known traditional Irish musicians: button accordionist James Keane, fiddle player Randal Bays and guitarist Daithí Sproule. James is playing the new “Castagnari Keanebox” (called after James’ website), 3 voice B/C accordion. The group has been in huge demand and can be contacted at www.jameskeeane.com. They play three reels: “Land of Sunshine” composed by New York accordionist Martin Mulhaire (which is this week’s Tutorial), “Capel Street” and “Hughie Travers”.
