ComhaltasLive #231 - 1: Curtin sisters and Friends
Two selections of reels from an impromptu street session at Fleadh Cheoil ha hÉireann 2007 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. The musicians are sisters Gretta (on concertina) and Catherine (on concert flute) Curtin and Ann Marie Fitzgerald from Brosna, Co. Kerry.
The first selection has accompaniment on spoons while the second does not. Any views on the use of spoons for accompaniment in Irish traditional music?
And as always, tune names always welcome below!

The second set of reels is John Brennan’s and The Mountain Top, I believe.

I’m just a bit ‘biased’ toward all Irish music!! I like everything you have in your programs! This was one great sounding street session ...normally hate ‘spoons’
but I guess they’re OK ...good bodhran playing would be much better!
I also like the notated tunes that you have from time to time.
Keep up the good work…

Great music here - pity about the spoons! Have to agree with Paddy on the tune names which I think is spot on.

Well, I think I am too old. But spoons for me are great. I play them too, as well as bones. As I am a bodhran player I agree with some other folks, but spoons fit quite well to irsh tunes.
Kind regards from Luxembourg

I enjoy your website; it’s nice to hear music from all over; I do enjoy the spoons (as I play them myself), since it does allow people who have rhythm to join in the fun! But of course, they should only be played with the appropriate tunes!

First set: Tune is Reel of Scéachóg composed by John Brady.
Second set: Dick Sherlock’s and The Mountain Top
