ComhaltasLive #232 - 1: Joannie Madden on Whistle

One of the queens of the tin whistle, Joannie Madden plays a selection of reels commencing with “The High Reel” (The Whistling Postman) and concluding with a recent composition by Joannie called “Shoot When the Ducks are Flying”. Guitar accompaniment is by Daithí Sproule. We made this recording at the 2007 Comhaltas American Convention held in Atlanta, Georgia. Incidentally, the next Convention will be held in Parsippany in March of 2008.

The middle one has been known as Mary Bergin’s since she recorded it on her first solo album as a Gan Ainm. I think John Naughton’s is an earlier title.

The second one is known primarily as Mary Bergin’s. Great whistle playing, some of the best I’ve ever heard!!

I’ve seen the second tune named Bergin’s, Naughton’s, Friel’s, and
The Japanese Stair.
