ComhaltasLive #238: Fleadh Moments
This week we bring you some of the talented musicians and dancers taking part in Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2007, along with another clip from the Peig Ryan concert in Limerick.
| Time | Segment |
|---|---|
| 00:00 | Cian Kearns from Collooney, Co. Sligo, the 2007 All-Ireland Senior Champion on whistle and concert flute, plays two reels on whistle. These tunes were recorded in Gurteen, Co. Sligo (one of the five Comhaltas Regional Resource Centres in Ireland) in November 2004 after Cian had won the U–18 title. Incidentally, Cian’s aunt, Deirdre Callis also won All-Ireland titles on whistle, flute and button accordion. The tunes are: “The Leitrim Lilter” composed by Charlie Lennon, and “Ned Killeen’s”. |
| 02:57 | From the Peig Ryan tribute concert in Cappamore, Co. Limerick in June 2007, a selection of jigs played by the Mulcahy family. Louise (flute), Michelle (fiddle) and Mick Mulcahy (button accordion) are joined by Billy Mc Glynn on bouzouki. |
| 06:50 | The extraordinary scene and the music in O’Connor Square, Tullamore at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2007 when 2,700 musicians converged to establish a World Record for the largest session. Here we have a variety of traditional Irish music played by musicians of many nationalities, followed by the reaction of Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú, Director-General of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. |
| 15:49 | Some of the informal dancing and music in the streets at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2007 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. |
| 17:09 | A street performance from Megan (fiddle) and Ciaran Ryan (banjo) of Scotland, visitors at Fleadh 2007. |
| 18:14 | Another great street session at Fleadh 2007 in Tullamore, led by the Curtin sisters - Gretta on concertina and Catherine on flute - and Anne-Marie Fitzgerald on fiddle from Brosna, Co. Kerry. They play a selection of reels. The first tune, composed by Ed Reavy, is “The Hunter’s House”, and the last reel, “The Reconciliation” is this week’s tutorial. |

You’d better believe it. I was there it was the biggest gathering of musicians I have ever seen and yes there were spectators. The Square was full .It holds about 4,000 People

2,700 musicians. I doubt that very much! Where on earth did Comhaltas come up with this figure. Seems to be more spectators that musicians!
