ComhaltasLive #239: Highlights from 2007

This week we’re re-broadcasting some of our favourite clips from the past year of ComhaltasLive. Since re-launching the videos online in February 2007, we’ve received great feedback from Irish music lovers around the world. If there’s anything specific that you’d like to see more of, let us know and we’ll do our best!

Time Segment
00:00 One of the ComhaltasLive favourites, here is a selection of reels played by Edel Fox from Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare: “Devanney’s Goat”, “The Bag of Spuds” and “Maud Millar”. This clip originally appeared in ComhaltasLive #198 - Focus on Tullamore
04:03 Another ComhaltasLive favourite, here is Ernestine Healy (concertina), one of the Directors of the annual Meitheal Residential Summer School with a selection of jigs, joined by Fionnuala Rooney on harp. The first tune was recorded by Louise Kelly, followed by “Port na gCairdeanna” and concluding with “The Rolling Waves”. This clip originally appeared in ComhaltasLive #206 - Meitheal Summer School.
07:54 We present another ComhaltasLive favourite, All-Ireland Senior button accordion champion for 2005 and 2007 Damien Mullane from West London CCÉ. Here Damien plays “The Bridge of Athlone” hornpipe followed by “The Gooseberry Bush” reel. This clip originally appeared in ComhaltasLive #205 - Music from Britain.
12:18 Recorded in Atlanta, Georgia USA in April 2007 at the Comhaltas North American Convention, Joannie Madden performs a selection of reels with backing guitar by the mighty Daithí Sproule. The first tune is “The High Reel” and the last one is a very recent composition by Joannie, called “Shoot When the Ducks Are Flying” in honour of her friend Jim Coogan. This clip originally appeared in ComhaltasLive #232 - Music from Atlanta, Birr and Tullamore.
15:38 Another of the highlights of ComhaltasLive 2007 was this selection of reels played by Orlaith McAuliffe, commencing with “The Moving Cloud.” This recording was made at The Irish Centre in Hammersmith where the West London Comhaltas 50th Anniversary Concert took place on 27 April, 2007. This clip originally appeared in ComhaltasLive #209 - Music from Britain and North America.

Hi there,

Great site as I have said before, I would love to see more Donegal fiddle playing, it really is the most exciting music to come out of the country in the past 25 years.

Keep up the great work.

Warm Regards

Liam
