ComhaltasLive #244: Music from the Four Provinces (Full Programme)

In this week’s ComhaltasLive programme, we bring music from the four provinces of Ireland, including some spectacular young players.

Time Segment
00.00 A selection of tunes by Clare fiddle player Tara Breen, who has won All-Ireland honours on several instruments. Tara plays a hornpipe, “The Second Star” learned from the playing of Dessie Donnelly, followed by two reels: “Paddy Ryan’s Dream” and “President Garfield’s”, which she learned from the playing of fiddle player Máire O’Keefe. This selection is dedicated to Chris and Ciarán Algar from Stoke-on-Trent in England, who sent us a very encouraging note. Chris’ son Ciarán won the All-Ireland Under-12 fiddle slow air title in Tullamore in 2007 and receives occasional tuition from Máire, who lives in Kinvara, Co. Galway. At the end of the clip, a quick identification contest — leave your comments below!
04.04 A hornpipe followed by two reels, played by the West Limerick flute player Michael King who also has featured on Comhaltas concert tours. (Incidentally, the Comhaltas Tour of Britain took the road on Feb 23rd.) Michael plays “The Stage Hornpipe” followed by two reels, the first one learned from Garry Shannon, and the second “The Braes of Busby”. Guitar accompaniment is by Sean Leahy from Dún Chaoin, Co. Kerry.
09:20 Co. Armagh fiddle player Erin McGeown plays a selection of three reels, accompanied on guitar by Deirdre Murray of Toome, Co. Antrim. The first one Erin learned from the playing of Fiddlesticks, the second is a version of “The Mason’s Apron” and the third reel is a setting of “The Maid Behind the Bar”.
13.42 From a very well-known musical family in Co. Meath, Fergus McGorman plays lovely settings of two old reels: “The Shaskeen” and “The Old Copperplate”. Some of Fergus’ musical influences are his father Tom, his mother Catherine McEvoy and, as evidenced in this selection, Seamus Tansey.
16.06 From Elphin CCÉ, Co. Roscommon, accordion player Keith Gildea plays “Dowd’s Reel”. Keith is a pupil of the great Joe Burke and is one of the many musicians who attend Joe’s renowned School of Traditional Music in Loughrea, Co. Galway.
