00:00 | Here is a set of reels from Cruinniú, recorded at the Nyah Festival in Cavan in March 2007. The first two reels, composed by Vincent Broderick, are “The Milky Way” and “The Crock of Gold” which is this weeks’ tutorial. The third reel is “The Green Mountain”. The members of Cruinniú are: Áine Bird (fiddle), Anne-Marie Grogan (flute), Caitlín Ní Gabhann (concertina), Síobhán O’Donnell (bodhran and singer), Jack Talty (keyboard) and Ryan Graham (guitar). Accordion player Damien O’Reilly was unavoidably absent on the night. The 2008 Nyah Festival, spearheaded by accordionist Martin Donohoe, runs during March at various centres around county Cavan. |
03:39 | Also from the Nyah 2007 festival, a selection of Sliabh Luachra polkas played by fiddle player Séamus Creagh (who hails originally from Co. Westmeath) and Rob Murphy of Cavan on flute. Séamus names the second and third polkas as “The Lonesome Polka” and “Dan Mack’s” respectively. |
08:33 | From the Nyah Festival, flute player Garry Shannon lets us in on his incentive to master the playing of “The Contradiction Reel” in the key of A. With accompaniment by Pádraig O’Reilly on keyboard and Siobhán O’Donnell on bodrán, Garry plays two reels commencing with “The Contradiction Reel”. |
12:21 | From the 2007 Nyah Festival, an unusual and ornate piece of music played by uilleann piper Brian Mc Namara. “The Humours of Glynn” was composed by Pierce Power, who lived near the Waterford/Tipperary border. The tune can be found in O’Neill’s “Music of Ireland” as No. 176, and is No. 54 in “The Dance Music of Willie Clancy” by Pat Mitchell (Mercier). |
16:11 | From the 2007 Nyah Festival, a set of reels called “Major Moran’s Reels”, played by John McEvoy (fiddle) and John Wynne (flute), both from Co. Roscommon. “Major Moran” was Johnny Moran, a fiddle and flute player from Elphin, Co. Roscommon. |
