ComhaltasLive #266 (Full Programme)

This week we feature the fine music of fiddle players Laura Beagon, Joan Hanrahan, Darren McGee and Liz Gaughan, Nuala Hehir and Seán Óg Graham on button accordion, Donna McGee on banjo, concertina players Jack Talty and Dympna O’Sullivan along with Garry Shannon and David O’Brien on flute and Chris McGlone on Bodhrán.

Time Segment
00:00 2007 All-Ireland fiddle champion Laura Beagon from Co. Monaghan teams up with accordion player Seán Óg Graham and Chris McGlone on bodhrán, both from Co. Antrim. They play a set of reels: “Cúlfadda”, “The Woman of the House” and “The Boys of Ballysodare” played in the unusual key of ‘F’.
03:59 A set of jigs from button accordion player Nuala Hehir from Ennis, Co. Clare and fiddle player Liz Gaughan, originally from Manchester, England and now living in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. They learned the first tune from Clare concertina player Gearóid O’Halloran and they associate the second with the late Joe Liddy, fiddle player and composer from Co. Leitrim.
05:21 Concertina player Jack Talty from Lissycasey, Co. Clare and flute player David O’Brien play two reels: the first was composed by John Brady and the second is “The Duke of Leinster’s Wife”. Jack is nephew of the great Noel Hill.
08:36 Concert flute maestro Garry Shannon plays a set of jigs: the first is a composition of Dublin fiddle player Paul O’Shaughnessy, who was one of the team of tutors at the 2008 Meitheal Residential Summer School from 14th to 18th July. Garry is, of course, the co-ordinator of the school. Inaugurated in 2004, the school has been a huge success, attracting participants from all over Ireland and overseas. No doubt there will be huge interest in the 2009 school when details are announced at .
10:58 Well known fiddle player and Clare FM presenter Joan Hanrahan is joined by concertina player Dympna O’Sullivan for a set of three reels: “The Ewe Reel”, “Miss Monaghan” and “The Crooked Road”.
14:37 Another selection by Laura Beagon (fiddle) from Co. Monaghan, Seán Óg Graham (accordion) and Chris McGlone (bodhrán), both from Co. Antrim. They play a selection of jigs which they learned from the playing of June McCormack and Micheal Rooney. No doubt Laura will be defending her All-Ireland title at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, which takes place for the second successive year in Tullamore, Co. Offaly from 18th to 25th August.
18:04 From Mayobridge, Co. Antrim, Darren and Donna McGee play a set of reels on fiddle and banjo, respectively. The reels are: “The Maids of Castlebar” and “Seán Reid’s”, also known as “Gilbert Clancy’s”, which is this week’s tutorial.
