2008 All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band champions, the Innisfree Céilí Band from Sligo play the “Peach Blossoms” barn dance. This clip was originally broadcast on ComhaltasLive in 2008.
Band members are: Cormac Mac Diarmada, Damian O’Brien and Oisín Mac Diarmada, fiddles; Máire Nic Dhiarmada Finbar McGreevy and David Sheridan, flutes; Paul Finn, button accordion; Oliver Loughlin, piano accordion; Charles O’Connor, piano and Daragh Kelly on drums.

The Dromore Céilí Band from Co. Tyrone plays a set of jigs, commencing with “The Coming of Spring” by Paddy O’Brien. The selection was recorded at the Senior Céilí Band competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, held August 2008 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly.
Band members are: John Woods, Aileen Swift and Fergal Fafferty, fiddles; Catriona Garry and John Quinn, flutes; Conor Woods and Edel Quinn, accordion; Tomás Quinn, banjo; Aiveen Gormley, piano and Margaret Maguire, drums.

This week we bring you more from the Scoil Éigse Tutors’ Concert at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2008, including Ernestine Healy (concertina) with Geraldine O’Callaghan (fiddle), Janet Harbison (harp) with Mícheál Ó hAlmhain (whistle), Sabina McCague (harp), Máire Nic Dhiarmada (flute), Pádraig McGovern (uilleann pipes) and Oisín Mac Diarmada (fiddle) with Pádraig King (button accordion), Eileen Gannon (harp) and Kelly Winter (piano accordion) with Seán Cleland (fiddle), seán-nós dancing by Brian Cunningham and an item from the full complement of tutors.

Scoil Éigse 2008 featured the sean-nós dancing of Tutor Brian Cunningham. Here Brian does a spectacular performance to “Miss McLeod’s Reel”, played by accordionist Tommy Doherty, recorded at the Tutors’ Concert.

Several of the 2008 Scoil Éigse tutors came from overseas, including harper Eileen Gannon and piano accordionist Kelly Winter, both from St. Louis, and fiddle player Seán Cleland from Chicago, USA. Together they play three jigs: “The Pipe on the Hob” (three-part version), “The Castle Jig” and “The Battering Ram”. The music was recorded at the Tutors’ Concert at the end of Scoil Éigse.

Scoil Éigse 2008 was conducted by over 80 tutors. Five of these were Sabina McCague on harp from Co. Monaghan, Máire Nic Dhiarmada on flute from Co. Sligo, Pádraig McGovern on uilleann pipes from Co. Leitrim, Oisín Mac Diarmada on fiddle from Co. Sligo and Pádraig King from Co. Limerick on button accordion. Here they play two reels: “The Golden Keyboard” composed by New York button accordionist Martin Mulhaire, which is this week’s tutorial, and “The Fourpenny Bit”.

They play a set of reels: “Morning Star”, “Love at the Endings” composed by Ed Reavy, which is this week’s tutorial, and then “Morning Star” in a different key.

This week we bring you music from the tutors’ concert at Scoil Éigse, held at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore in August 2008. Scoil Éigse attendance reached a record level of over 800 students this year. Here is a selection of three reels played by tutors Finbar McGreevy on flute from Co. Roscommon and Fiona Doherty on fiddle from Sligo. The reels are: “The Hare’s Paw”, “The Cup of Tea” and “Jimmy McGettrick’s”.
