The programme ends with traditional singer Seamus Brogan from West London CCÉ lilting “Honan’s Hornpipe”, also known as “The Rover Through the Bog”. Séamus is a native of Co. Wexford.

- ComhaltasLive #241 - 5: Street session with Mick O’Connor at Fleadh 2007

A ComhaltasLive favourite, here is one of the big street sessions at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2007 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. This session is led by banjo player Mick O’Connor from London and accordionist Oliver Diviney from Galway. Adding to the international dimension is guitar player Tony O’ Rourke from Melbourne, Australia. The reels include: “Bell Harbour”, “The Flax in Bloom” and “Come West Along the Road”.

A ComhaltasLive favourite from Ennis, Co. Clare, Bronwyn Power here plays a hornpipe followed by a lovely interpretation of “The New Road” reel. Our tutorial this week is a setting of this reel as played in New York around 1959/60 by Andy Mc Gann, Paddy O’Brien, Larry Redigan and others.

A ComhaltasLive favourite, fiddle player Carmel Ó Dea from Ballynacally, Co. Clare playes a selection of reels. She learned the first one from the playing of PJ Crotty and James Cullinane, and composed the second reel, “The Ballcarriers” herself.

Five fiddlers with a selection of reels: “The Bird in the Bush” and the “Skylark”. The musicians are Bernadette and Antón Mac Gabhann from Co. Meath, Emma Woods and Anne Marie McGowan (a former ComhaltasLive presenter) from Dublin and Gary Lynch, now a music lecturer at the University of Limerick. They were recorded at Fleadh Nua, a music festival held in Ennis, Co. Clare.

A favourite ComhaltasLive clip, here are two reels composed by Josephine Keegan: “The Gates of Mullagh” (which is this week’s tutorial) and “Ronnie Cooper’s”. The tunes were played by 2004 All-Ireland Senior Fiddle Champion Mícheál Ó Rourke and button accordionist Larry Gavin,both from Tulla, Co. Clare. Piano accompaniament is by Deirdre McSherry from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.

A ComhaltasLive favourite, here is a selection of reels from the band “Fingal”, with James Keane on button accordion, Randal Bays on fiddle and Daithí Sproule on guitar. This music was recorded at the Comhaltas North American Convention in Atlanta, Georgia in April 2007. The reels are: “Land of Sunshine” (composed by Martin Mulhaire), “Capel St.” and “Hughie Travers’ Reel”.

A ComhaltasLive favourite, here is a concert flute duet by Kevin Crawford (of Lúnasa fame) and Liam Ó Riain which was recorded at the inaugural Meitheal Residential Summer School in 2004. Another of the highlights of ComhaltasLive 2007 was this selection of reels played by Orlaith McAuliffe, commencing with “The Moving Cloud.” This recording was made at The Irish Centre in Hammersmith where the West London Comhaltas 50th Anniversary Concert took place on 27 April, 2007.

Recorded in Atlanta, Georgia USA in April 2007 at the Comhaltas North American Convention, Joannie Madden performs a selection of reels with backing guitar by the mighty Daithí Sproule.
The first tune is “The High Reel” and the last one is a very recent composition by Joannie, called “Shoot When the Ducks Are Flying” in honour of her friend Jim Coogan.
