This week we present more music recorded at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore, Co. Offaly in August 2008, including:
- An impromptu session with Sorcha Rooney (harp) from Sligo, Daire Mulhearn (button accordion) from Ennis, Co. Clare, Karen Hickey (fiddle), Fiachra O’Regan (uilleann pipes) and Pádraig O’Neill (fiddle) of Dublin.
- A group of tutors from the 2008 Scoil Éigse, including Sabina McCague (harp) from Co. Monaghan, Máire Nic Dhiarmada (flute) of Sligo, Pádraig McGovern (uilleann pipes) of Leitrim, Oisín MacDiarmada (fiddle) of Sligo and Pádraig King (button accordion) of Limerick.
- The Innisfree, Dartry and Naithí Céilí Bands, recorded at the Senior Céilí Band competition.
- Bronwyn De Paor and Edel Quinn in the Senior Fiddle competition.

Second place in the Senior Céilí Band competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2008 also went to Co. Sligo: the Dartry Céilí Band. Included in their performance, they played this multi-part barn dance.
Band members are: John Kilkenny, Mossie Martin, Declan Folan and Philip Duffy, fiddles; Noelle Carroll and June McCormack, flutes; Michael Rooney, concertina; Stephen Nolan, accordion; Damien McGuinness, drums and Kevin Brehony, piano.

We include selections from the Under-18 All-Ireland fiddle competition, including fiddle players Niall Ó Murchú, Kelsey Lutz, Oisín Conway, Caoimhe Kearns, Síofra Nic Aodha, Brian Lindsay and Eimear Arkins. We also present a clip from the winners of the Senior Céilí Band competition, the Innisfree Céilí Band.

Newly-crowned All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band champions for 2008, the Innisfree Céilí Band from the Fred Finn Comhaltas branch in Sligo plays the “Peach Blossoms” barn dance.
Band members are: Cormac Mac Diarmada, Damian O’Brien and Oisín Mac Diarmada, fiddles; Máire Nic Dhiarmada Finbar McGreevy and David Sheridan, flutes; Paul Finn, button accordion; Oliver Loughlin, piano accordion; Charles O’Connor, piano and Daragh Kelly on drums.

A selection of barn dances played by Antón Mac Gabhann, the organiser of the annual Mullahoran concert, Co. Cavan on fiddle, together with his family: Caitlín on concertina, Bernadette on fiddle and Seán on button accordion. The first tune, “The New Broom”, was composed by East Galway flute player Vincent Broderíck, who has been living in Dublin for many years where he is a member of the Cumann na bPíobairí Uileann branch of Comhaltas. The tune is also this week’s tutorial. The second tune is called “If There Weren’t Any Women in the World”.
Both tunes are included in Foinn Seisiún Book 3, which is a compilation of 108 session tunes put together into sets by fiddle payer Brian Prior and published by Comhaltas in 2007. Books 1, 2 and 3 are available from Comhaltas at http://comhaltas.ie/shop, and CDs are now available to accompany books 1 & 2. The CD to accompany Book 3 is underway, and will be released at Fleadh Nua in Ennis in May, 2008.

This music was recorded at the special concert of West Limerick music organized by the Munster council of Comhaltas at the Munster Fleadh in Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick in July 2007.

A selection of reels by the MacGabhann family from Ashbourne, Co. Meath. Antón (fiddle), Seán (button accordion), Caitlín (concertina) and Bernadette (fiddle) MacGabhann play, accompanied by Philip Clarke of Co. Cavan on piano. Some lovely old-style dancing is provided by Bernie, Caítlín and Bernadette.
The reels include “Caitlín’s Reel”, “The Dancing Girl from Clare”, “Boys of Ballysodare” and “The Five-Mile Chase.” The music was recorded at the 2007 Mullahoran Concert in County Cavan.

The 2007 Concert Tour of Ireland features Evelyn Healy and Katie Cullen on fiddle, Peter Staunton and John Carroll on button accordion, Sean Walsh and Siobhán Ní Chonaráin on flute, Jimmy Morrison on uilleann pipes, Ernestine Healy on Concertina, Brona Graham on banjo, Cathy Potter on harp, Eimear Arkins, Joe Arkins and Bruce Scott singing and Sonny Mc Dermott as the tour manager. The dancers are Aidan Mc Loughlin (Leitrim), Teresa Donaghue (Westmeath), Laura Crossan (Leitrim), Cathal McGarrigle (Offaly) and Hannah Longmore (Wicklow).

Pete is joined by the full group of musicians and five dancers, concluding with “The Ivy Leaf Reel”. The dancers are Aidan Mc Koughlin (Leitrim), Teresa Donaghue (Westmeath), Laura Crossna (Leitrim), Cathal Mc Garrigle (Offaly) and Hannah Longmore (Wicklow).
