Originally from Newport, Co. Tipperary, button accordion player Murt Ryan and his brother Noel (guitar) now live in Ennis, Co. Clare. Together with well-known banjo player Marcus Maloney from Cappamore, Co. Limerick, they play three reels ending with “The Whistling Postman” which is this week’s tutorial. Although often credited to Paddy O’ Brien, the accordion maestro and composer from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, Paddy did not compose this tune. However, he did compose a reel, “The Four-Leafed Shamrock”, the beginning of which slightly resembles “The Whistling Postman”.
They were recorded at the Peig Ryan Tribute Concert held in June of 2007.

One of the queens of the tin whistle, Joannie Madden plays a selection of reels commencing with “The High Reel” (The Whistling Postman) and concluding with a recent composition by Joannie called “Shoot When the Ducks are Flying”. Guitar accompaniment is by Daithí Sproule. We made this recording at the 2007 Comhaltas American Convention held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Fiddle player Attracta Brady continues with three reels, beginning with “Dinny O’Brien’s” composed by the great Paddy O’Brien in honour of his father Dinny during the 1940s. Paddy’s original setting of this reel is this week’s tutorial. The other reels are “Maudabawn Chapel” composed by Ed Reavy and “The Reel of Skahóg” by John Brady.

A selection of jigs played on fiddle by Attracta Brady who was chairperson of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore in August 2007. The jigs were composed by Attracta’s father, John, and called “The Twins’ Delight” and “McIntyre’s”. Guitar accompaniment is by John O’Connell.
