Concert flute maestro Garry Shannon plays a set of jigs: the first is a composition of Dublin fiddle player Paul O’Shaughnessy, who was one of the team of tutors at the 2008 Meitheal Residential Summer School from 14th to 18th July. Garry is, of course, the co-ordinator of the school. Inaugurated in 2004, the school has been a huge success, attracting participants from all over Ireland and overseas. No doubt there will be huge interest in the 2009 school when details are announced at

All-Ireland senior button accordion champion (2005 and 2007) Damien Mullane plays the four-part jig, “The King of the Pipers”, which he played in the 2005 All-Ireland Fleadh.
Damien is one of the outstanding tutors at this year’s Meitheal Residential Summer School held in Limerick from 14th to 18th July. A small number of vacancies are still available. Contact co-ordinator Garry Shannon at meitheal2@eircom.net for more details.

Under its development strategy, Comhaltas has over several years been establishing Meitheal Regional Resource Centers around Ireland, each including performance theatres, tuition facilities, archives, etc. Recently in the Sligo Centre - the Ceoláras Coleman in Gurteen - we recorded the legendary Sligo fiddle and flute player Peter Horan and fiddle player Gerry Harrington playing these three reels: “The Trip to Portobello”, “The Old Blackthorn Stick” and “The Green Groves of Erin”.

A ComhaltasLive favourite, here is a concert flute duet by Kevin Crawford (of Lúnasa fame) and Liam Ó Riain which was recorded at the inaugural Meitheal Residential Summer School in 2004.
