A celebration of song at Brú na Sí

– On Wednesday 18th June, noted singer Seán Ó Sé and American professor Matthew Allen will perform an intimate concert at Brú na Sí in Youghal. Cork native Seán Ó Sé rose to fame during his time with Seán Ó Riada’s group Ceoltóirí Cualann. He is best known for his rendition of the song ‘An poc ar buille’. Seán has appeared on a number of albums and in recent years has toured with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.

Matthew Allen is no stranger to Cork having lectured on many occasions at University College Cork. An excellent guitar player, Matthew spent a year in Cork studying aspects of harmony in Irish traditional music. Matthew has published a number of articles on Asian Music and is co-ordinator of the Asian Studies programme at Wheaton. He also teaches and performs Carribean Music and, of course, Irish music.

In recent times Seán and Matthew have been performing together on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2007, Sean was a Haas Visiting Artist in residence at Wheaton College in Boston. While there, Tradition, a five piece band from Boston including Matthew Allen acted as Seán’s backing band.

Brú na Sí provides a unique and intimate fireside setting. It is the home of the Youghal branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and the internationally renowned performing group Ceolta Sí. Guest singers, musicians and storytellers will be invited to contribute on the night.

Doors will open at 8.30pm and tickets are being offered at the special price of €8/5. For more information contact Daithí on (087) 641 9081 or [email protected].
