ROBBIE MCMAHON – Will receive the Fleadh Nua Gradam Ceoil award 2011 ( THE OLD GROUND HOTEL) FRIDAY, 27th. May at 9.30 P.M.

Will you sit back a while till I sing you a song…….” Ballad singer, lilter, song writer and comedian ROBBIE MCMAHON has enthralled audiences all over Ireland, the UK and the US for more than 70 years with his inimitable style of singing and lilting and with his infectious good humour. Winner of several All Ireland titles for singing in English and Irish, lilting and newly composed ballads, he holds court on the first Friday of each month in Duggan’s in Spancilhill at a soirée known “Robbie’s First Friday.” Robbie’s life received the Hollywood treatment in the shape of the acclaimed film documentary “Last Night as I Lay Dreaming.” No stranger to accolades, the esteemed office of President of the Ennis Singers’ Club sits lightly on his shoulders and Robbie was recently accorded a civic reception by Clare County Council. A notable participant on several Comhaltas tours, that organisation bestowed a Gradam Seirbhíse on him two years ago. Robbie’s talent is not confined to his fine voice as evidenced by the many great songs such as “The Old Man in the Hob” and “The Red Cross Social” which he has composed. But “The Fleadh down in Ennis” must surely rank as his masterpiece.

DECLAN COYNE – Will receive Fleadh Nua Gradam Ceoil award 2011 (THE OLD GROUND HOTEL) SATURDAY, 28th. May at 9.30 P.M.

DECLAN COYNE from Dysart in South Roscommon has organised and continues to organise various music festivals and sessions throughout the county. He has produced two books on Roscommon musicians and music He is a founder member and MC of the South Roscommon Singers Circle and was involved in the Celtic Links Festival. He is Co-ordinator /Director of the Annual International Knockcroghery Singers Festival and Annie McNulty awards. He has been involved in the production of a number of CD’s. Declan is a well-known and respected singer and regularly attends singing festivals and sessions all over Ireland. His contribution to the preservation and promotion of singing is inestimable.

REMEMBERING GARRY MCMAHON – Fleadh Nua Gradam Ceoil 2011 will be awarded posthumously to Garry McMahon (THE OLD GROUND HOTEL) SUNDAY, 29Tth.May at 9.30 P.M.

All-Ireland football medalist, All Ireland champion singer, raconteur, writer and composer GARRY MCMAHON passed to his Eternal reward on March 5th 2008. Though he practiced law in Newcastle West for 46 years, he always retained an affinity with his Kerry heritage, and this is reflected in his many great compositions. His songs reflect his life interests, and he acknowledges the influence of his late father, author, teacher and broadcaster, Bryan McMahon. Garry sang of days of emigration and the nostalgia of the exile, of his love of his two home places, Kerry and West Limerick, of his love for his wife and family, of his desire for peace, his love of sport and of his abiding religious convictions. One of his songs, “The Land of the Gael”, has already been recorded by a number of other artists. He was a renowned singer of Sean nós and ballads. He has written two Masses in Irish which have been broadcast on RTE. One of them has since been translated into English. Representatives of the West Limerick Singing Club will be on hand to join in this tribute to their erstwhile attendee and friend.
