Celebrating Ten Years of Comhaltas in Douglas

– Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann is an organisation that promotes Irish traditional music around the world. The Douglas branch, Craobh Dúglais CCÉ, is celebrating ten years of musical activities in Douglas in 2007. Classes are held through the year at Gaelscoil an Athair Tadhg Ó Murchú in Douglas. Members come from all over Cork city and neighbouring areas. 2007 was another successful year for the branch at the county Fleadh Cheoil, which was held in Dunmanway. Not only did many branch members bring home medals on a range of instruments, many of the youngest members performed on a stage for the first time.

A number of plans are underway to celebrate this momentous occasion but the main aim of the year is to prepare the branch for the future. As part of the tenth anniversary of the foundation of Craobh Dúglais CCÉ, the branch is attempting to set up an instrument bank. The purpose of this is to have a collection of instruments available to young people who wish to learn Irish traditional music. Instruments can cost thousands of euros making participation in Irish traditional music difficult for some people.

There are two parts to the instrument bank project. We are requesting that anybody with unused instruments would make them available to the branch. Such a gesture would enhance the service provided by the branch and improve accessibility amongst young people in Cork to Irish traditional music. Secondly, in recognition of the success of a number of our members on a national level, we hope to obtain ten quality instruments to mark ten years of activity. To date we have purchased an accordion through fundraising in the branch and have been bequeathed a beautiful, handmade harp.

Should you or anyone you know be in a position to sponsor an instrument in this scheme, please contact Aislinn Cogan on (021) 437 2035 or Daithí Kearney on (087) 641 90 81.
