The Centenary of Seanad Éireann was held in the Dáil chamber on the 12th December 2020. In attendance were current and former senators and the assembly was addressed by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin, TD.

Comhaltas was asked to provide an uilleann piper and harpist for the historic occasion. They selected two of the most prominent exponents of these instruments Mary Kelly and Éamonn Walsh. (see separate article on Éamonn)

Mary Kelly has played a central role in the life of Comhaltas down through the years. She has toured extensively with the organisation and Cashel’s renowned Brú Ború of which she has been a member for many years. She is talented, creative and elegant and is a regular performer at Áras an Uachtaraín.

Éamonn was Cathaoirleach of the much acclaimed Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Ballina. He will also chair the Connacht Provincial Fleadh this year.

The proceedings in the Dáil chamber, which was full to capacity, was presided over by Seanad Cathaoirleach Mark Daly. He complimented the Comhaltas musicians and referred to the cultural work of Comhaltas over the years. He also referenced the Ard Stiúrthóir Lábhrás Ó Murchú whom he said served as a Senator for 19 years. The Cathaoirleach said that history was made that day as it was the first time that music was played during a session of the Oireachtas.
