TTCT Preparatory Course

The purpose of a Preparatory Teaching Course is to give musicians the opportunity to explore their skills as aspiring teachers. This course would be the next step in the Comhaltas Education Programme and would bridge the gap between the SCT and the TTCT. While a candidate gains their valuable teaching experience necessary for entrance to the TTCT, this course gives the teacher guidelines and the incentive to further enhance their potential.  This one-day course is aimed at potential teachers from 16 years of age and up. No previous teaching experience is required. This course also provides an incentive for current TTCT teachers to refresh their knowledge and skills if they so wish. 

Course Description:

This course is designed to equip the learner with the knowledge and skills needed for teaching Irish traditional Music The objective of the Preparatory Course is to produce musicians/teachers that have an appreciation of the music they play, and the legacy passed on to us by composers and tune carriers.  In other words, they are not merely mechanical players, however accomplished, but are educated and knowledgeable on matters dealing with the transmission of Irish traditional music.  Our aim is to continue to develop high quality teaching standards by musical education and appreciation. 

The Preparatory Course is a course of substance and value and provides a unique opportunity for both aspiring and experienced teachers to further enhance their teaching skills, methodology, increase their knowledge to ensure that the best possible tuition is given to students of Irish traditional music at all stages of learning and development.

Documentation for this course is detailed, comprehensive and easy to read. Students receive a comprehensive Course Manual, Assignments, Efficient Study guide, and Tutor Support for the course duration. 

Course Details:

The purpose of a preparatory teaching course is to give musicians the opportunity to explore their skills as aspiring teachers. The course is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to work in conjunction with local CCÉ branches, schools both primary and secondary, third level institutions and relevant organisations etc. The student also works on the planning, preparation and organisation involved in many educational activities, initiatives and performances undertaken at local and national level.

The aims of a preparatory course would be for aspiring teachers to progress further in the highly specialised field and achieve the following aims: –

  • Develop and manage a programme of learning
  • Provide information, advice and guidance
  • Assessment of students
  • Communication and transmission skills
  • Less common musical forms
  • Class planning
  • Class management
  • Class layout
  • Overview of teaching reed, string and wind instruments
  • SCT syllabus as a teaching aid
  • Understanding our song and slow air tradition
  • Research and sources of suitable teaching material in the Irish traditional idiom appropriate to the various levels
  • Child protection and Garda vetting
  • Data protection
Learners who successfully complete this course will:
  • provide a quality Irish traditional music education that develops young learner’s performance.
  • communicate effectively with learners regarding the development of a well-rounded musician.
  • enhance the quality of learners’ ability to continue and progress through the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann educational structure and through primary, secondary and third level education.

Progression to further Studies:

Within the Comhaltas educational structure this course is the next step to the entry to the TTCT and it bridges the gap between the SCT and the TTCT. While a candidate gains their valuable teaching experience necessary for entrance to the TTCT, this course gives the teacher guidelines and the incentive to further enhance their potential.
