You are welcome to join us for a special event to remember the late Gerry Whelan.
Gerry was actively involved with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann since the organisation was set up in 1951, and was President of the Ulster Council for a period of thirty years. With his beloved melodeon or bodhran in hand, Gerry liked nothing better than to settle down to a good seisiún.
- A weekend of music sessions with local and visiting musicians
- Music workshops on Banjo, Fiddle and Accordion, Singing & Storytelling
- Memorial concert with Guest Artists – Peter Horan & Gerry Harrington; Gerry ‘Fiddle’ O’Connor & Cathal McConnell; Angelina Carberry & Martin Quinn, All Ireland Marching Bands Parade.

9.30pm | Mullen’s | Official Opening and Traditional Session: Official Opening by John Molloy (Chairman Cootehill CCE). Session with special guests from Leitrim: Dave Sheridan Flute, Pairic Mc Govern Pipes, Donal Reilly Accordion, John Mc Cartin Guitar joined by local musicians. | |
Saturday 20th September | 11am – 2pm | St. Michaels Hall | Music Workshops. Accordion workshop with Martin Quinn, Banjo workshop with Angelina Carberry, Fiddle workshop Gerry O’Connor |
3pm | Don Smith’s | Ulster Singing / Storytelling Session. Geraldine Bradley: traditional singer in Irish & English, Mick Quinn: Mullaghbawn Traditional singer & storyteller. Cathal McConnell from the ‘Boys of the Lough’: traditional singer & collector, with a large repertoire of Ulster songs. The afternoon will finish with a traditional session with some musician friends from Ulster playing a few tunes. | |
Saturday Night | 8.30pm | Drumlin Theatre | Memorial Concert. With welcome address by Comhaltas President, Jim Teevan, and special guests: Angelina Carberry Banjo & Martin Quinn Accordion, Peter Horan Flute & Gerry Harrington Fiddle, Cathal McConnell (from the Boys of the Lough) Flute & Gerry ‘Fiddle’ O’Connor, Geraldine Bradley Singer, Seamus Fay Lilter, supported by Ring of Gullion CCE and local musicians. Admission 10euro. |
10.30pm | Traditional Sessions in Mullen’s, Don Smith’s, Hannigan’s, Bannon’s and Fergus Donaghue’s with Guest artists from concert and musicians from Cootehill, Cavan, Monaghan, Louth, Meath, Armagh and Down. | ||
Sunday 21st September | 12.30pm | Laying of Wreath at Gerry’s Grave for deceased members of Cootehill CCE with piper Patrick Martin | |
Sunday Afternoon | 2.30pm | Celebrations take to the streets with a Marching Band Parade. Winning All Ireland Marching Bands will parade with their ‘Gerald Whelan Memorial’ trophies. | |
3.30pm | Open air afternoon session. Session for young and old with Patrick Martin Flute / Pipes, Ceoltóirí Drumlin, Cunningham and Brady families and musicians from Cootehill, Cavan, Monaghan, Louth, Armagh and Down. | ||
7pm | Mullen’s | Closing Session. Sean McCague and Laura Beagon from Monaghan will perform the closing session for the weekend. All Musicians welcome. |
