It will focus on his commitment to cultural nationalism particularly in relation to his involvement with traditional Irish Music. He was a gifted uileann piper and founder member of the Dublin piper’s club. As a Gaelic League activist he promoted the Irish language with great passion, encouraging the people of Ireland to value and take pride in their identity. The talk will, of course look at his role as a revolutionary leader and his legacy as one of the most significant figures in Irish history.
The evening will also feature the music of the uileann pipes, returning to this locality after a long absence. The music will be led by one of Ireland’s finest pipers, Leonard Barry who is presently teaching the pipes at the Coleman Music Centre with very encouraging results! He will be joined by some of his promising pupils, and will play a selection of tunes actually played by Ceannt himself at a Gaelic League concert. Leonard will be joined by the outstanding fiddle player, Gerry Harrington well known in Co Sligo for his recordings with Peter Horan.
