Saturday’s Fleadh Nua entertainment continues with open air gig-rig performances, street sessions, céilís, etc as listed below.
However, a highlight of the day’s activities has to be the Kilfenora Céilí Band Glór concert.
100 years in the business, the Kilfenora Céilí Band will be celebrating their centenary at the Glór Irish Music Centre. From village parties in the early 1900s to bigger dances in the 1930s, broadcasts in the 1940s, commercial recordings in the 1950s, foreign tours in the 1960s right down to their current international profile, each new generation slots seamlessly into the groove of their forebears. Add to this three back-to-back All-Ireland Céilí Band titles in 1954, 1955 & 1956 and again in 1993, 1994 & 1995 and this has to be unquestionably the best Céilí Band of all time.
The group can follow its roots back into the late 1800s. At the time, Music was an important feature of life in rural Ireland. Kilfenora boasted a fine brass band, which gradually evolved into a dance band. Its story is the story of Irish music itself. The Kilfenora features fiddles, flutes, banjo, and squeezeboxes, with what “Folk Roots” magazine called “one of the tightest rhythm sections in the world”. The Kilfenora have consolidated their position as one of the world’s greatest and longest running Irish céilí bands. They have visited Britain, Northern Ireland, Europe and the U.S.
