Press Release Leinster Fleadh 2014 – Moate, Co. Westmeath Fleadh Laighean 2014 – An Móta, Co. na hIarmhí
Westmeath County Board of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, in association with Leinster Council of Comhaltas, has chosen the town of Moate, Co. Westmeath as the host venue for the 2014 Leinster Fleadh.
The Leinster Fleadh will be held on the weekend of the 11th, 12th and 13th of July 2014, in Moate, and will be hosted by Westmeath County Board.
Following a long selection process, which involved Leinster Council and all Comhaltas branches in the county, Moate was unanimously chosen by the County Board as the host venue because of its size, its rich tradition in Irish Music, Song and Dance, and most importantly, for its huge number of excellent facilities to cater for the large crowds of competitors and spectators which will attend the Fleadh.
Over 5,000 competitors, along with their families and friends, are expected to attend the Fleadh from all parts of Leinster to compete for a place at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann which next year is being held in Sligo. The 1st and 2nd placed competitors from all counties in Leinster will compete in all age groups from Under 12, through to Senior and in all musical instruments, solos, duets, trios, groups, dancing and singing.
Following on from the success of Edenderry in 2013, the 2014 Leinster Fleadh will feature top class Traditional Irish entertainment over the weekend of the 11th, 12th and 13th of July 2014 and the week leading up to it, including live street entertainment, gig-rigs, a Session Trail, Céilithe, Recitals, Sean Nós Dancing, and a Fleadh Concert. The Fleadh competitions themselves will be held in Moate Community School. Tuar Ard Theatre and Moate Community Hall, both of which are across the road from the School will also hold competitions.
The main priority for the County Board in the selection of Moate as the host town was the availability of up to 30 safe and accessible venues for the Fleadh Competitions in a central location. Tuar Ard and the Community Hall, as well as the large concert hall in the school will cater for the larger competitions such as Céilí Bands, Grúpa Cheoil, Set Dancing, etc. Areas for rehearsal will also be available close to competition venues.
The fact that the competition venues are set in the centre of the town was an added attraction, allowing competitors and their families and friends to enjoy and take part in the street entertainment, and engage with what the town has to offer. Traditional music fans from all parts of Ireland and further afield will be invited to the Fleadh.
Westmeath has a rich heritage of Traditional Music, Song and Dance, and Moate is an important facet of that, with its Dún na Sí Teach Ceoil and Heritage Park, regular Irish sessions in the town, and links to Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann dating back to the founding of the organisation in Mullingar in 1951. With the support of the local Branch of Comhaltas as well as all other branches in the county, the County Board hope that the Leinster Fleadh 2014 in Westmeath will be a huge success, and a chance for Westmeath to showcase its Traditional Music talent and heritage at a national level.
