Top Newfoundland traditional band to play in Cootehill and Belturbet
Patrons at two traditional music venues in Co Cavan are in for a rare treat indeed when the Newfoundland-based Graham Wells Trio visits Ireland next weekend. Kieran Mullen’s, Cootehill will be hosting the highly acclaimed band on Friday 26th June, while on Sunday 28th, the Widow’s, Belturbet will be featuring these top class musicians. Accordion maestro Graham and his band have been blazing a trail across North America, and the Cootehill and Belturbet shows — which are free of charge — promise to be occasions not to forget. Joined by Billy Sutton on fiddle and mandola and Matt Pepin on fiddle, Graham’s transatlantic mix of songs and tunes has been winning many new converts in recent years as his music reaches an ever increasing audience.
Graham Wells is undeniably one of the captains of Newfoundland’s traditional music scene. With his debut solo recording, ‘Traditional Music of Newfoundland’, he boldly stepped forward as the new standard-bearer of his island’s musical heritage and as a touchstone for its blossoming future. The album took home the Music NL 2008 award for Roots/Traditional Artist/Album. From subtle to brazen, brilliantly improvisational and deeply grounded, his music has been lauded as “truly the pure drop”.
It was after moving to Galway, Ireland for over a year in 1999 that Wells met the late great Irish fiddler Seamus Creagh. Seamus had suggested that he and Graham record an album to reflect the bond between the music of Ireland and Newfoundland. The result of this was ‘Island to Island’, the first direct collaboration on one album of the dance music of the two islands.
Billy Sutton, also from Newfoundland, is a multi-instrumentalist as well as a producer and arranger. His musical versatility has taken him to different parts of the globe, and he’s played a major role in the development and success of the multi-award winning, Celtic fusion band ‘The Fables’.
As a result of his accomplished skill and style on a variety of instruments, Billy has become a much sought-after musician for studio, radio, television and touring. The pair are joined by Canadian fiddle playing ace Matt Pepin, who has mastered various folk styles including Irish, Old Time and Cape Breton fiddling. When not recording or on tour, he teaches his well-honed skills to young musicians in his Ottawa home base. Matt’s ‘Pass it Down’ CD of 2007 has been described as “essential listening”, demonstrating “unique, tasteful arrangements of Canadian, Quebecois and Irish tunes from one of Canada’s premier young players”.
