Tulla Traditional Music Festival 11 – 13th September 2009

The 3rd Annual Tulla Traditional Music Festival in September is a weekend packed with wonderful music, song, dance, concerts, céilithe and workshops. This year we are showcasing some wonderful fiddle and flute players, with special guests, Martin Hayes, Mike Rafferty and Willie Kelly. Willie Kelly and Mike Rafferty will launch their CD “ New Broom” at Minogues on the Friday night, and they will be accompanied by Donal Clancy on guitar.

The legendary Mike Rafferty from East Galway who resides in New Jersey will be giving a flute workshop on Saturday morning; this is a rare opportunity for flute players to avail of a workshop with such a great musician. The wonderful fiddle player Willie Kelly also New Jersey based will host a fiddle workshop on Saturday along with Martin Hayes and Eileen O’Brien. Mícheál O’Raghallaigh is back by popular demand tutoring the concertina workshop. Dancing is catered for by Suzanne Leahy for Sean Nós dancing and Aidan Vaughan teaching steps for sets . The ever popular Nora Butler is teaching traditional singing. Saturday night’s Concert in St. Peter and Paul’s Church is a two part concert featuring Martin Hayes and Denis Cahill and At The Racket. We guarantee that you will enjoy a memorable hour of Martin and Denis performing their unique and extraordinary style of music. This will be followed in a completely contrasting style by the wonderful foursome “At The Racket”, when you will experience the joy, spirit and pure fun that is Irish music at its best. This year the concert will run over two hours to allow the set dancing fans to make it to the Céili Mór with Martin Hayes and the Tulla Céili Band at 10pm in St.Joseph’s Secondary School Hall.

The highlight of Sunday’s entertainment will be the Fiddle and Flute Recital featuring Martin Hayes, Mike Rafferty, Willie Kelly, and of course our own local virtuosos Vincent Griffin and Paddy O’Donoghue. Eileen O’Brien and Deirdre McSherry will complete this wonderful line up of fiddle and flute players. This is a treat not to be missed and will take place in Tulla Courthouse which is a beautiful setting for a music recital. Seating is limited at this venue so pre- booking is advised. Set Dancing fans will definitely not be disappointed; the weekend starts with an opening Céili at Powerhouse with Larry McEvoy on Friday night. On Saturday night Martin Hayes and the Tulla Céili Band will take to the stage at St Joseph’s Secondary School Hall at 10pm. The closing Céíli on Sunday night will have a magic of its own with music by Andrew MacNamara, Martin Hayes, Mark Donnellan and Jim Corry.
Robbie McMahon and Nora Butler will host a singing session at Teach Ól on Sunday at 12.00pm; this has proven to be a very popular part of our festival for the past few years and all singers are welcome. We have pub sessions in the town all weekend from lunchtime to closing time featuring the very best of local musical talent and visiting musicians.
