Joseph Browne Spring School Of Traditional Music

The 5th annual Joseph Spring School of Traditional Music will take place this year from Feb. 24th to Feb. 26th in Kinvara, Co. Galway. The Joseph Browne Spring School of Traditional Music was first held in February 2007 in response to the tragic and untimely death of nineteen year old Joseph Browne. Joseph was an exceptionally talented musician, both in the traditional and classical fields. He was also a composer in both traditions. The Spring School, as well as celebrating his memory, seeks to carry on his music teaching and his strong belief in ‘passing on’ what he himself had learned. A key feature of the Spring School is the provision of classes and workshops through which we ‘pass on’ our wonderful traditional music to our young people. This year we have broadened our range of classes to include: fiddle, concertina, pipes, accordion, tin whistle, concert flute, guitar, bodhrán and piano/keyboard. Banjo classes will be provided if there is sufficient demand. All classes are being given, as always, by highly competent musicians and teachers. We have an additional feature in 2011, prompted by requests made by last year’s participants. On Saturday, Feb. 26th, we will have a Masterclass in Traditional Singing conducted by Edel Vaughan, a well-known singer and performer. Singers of all ages are very welcome to this event. We are happy, too, that we will have what promises to be an intimate and very enjoyable benefit concert in Johnston’s Hostel, Kinvara on Friday night, February 25th. Incidentally, we have moved the Spring School this year to Kinvara, with the classes and workshops taking place in St. Joseph’s Primary School there. Please refer to EVENTS for further information
