The Ballymote Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann was formed in November 1956. Ballymote is in South Sligo - an area steeped in traditional music and culture. Even local townland names resonate with names of tunes,eg, The Hill of Knocknashee, The Keash Jig, The Templehouse Reel. Our treasurer Michael Hurley and also our branch member, Fiona Doherty, teach music throughout the area and both have a keen insight and knowledge of the Sligo repertoire and style . We have recently inaugurated the Paddy Killoran Traditional Festival to commemorate Paddy Killoran’s wonderful style of fiddle playing. Paddy was born a half mile from Ballymote (1903 - 1965) and emigrated to New York. His many recordings have left a lasting legacy . He is regarded as one of the great Sligo Fiddlers , along with Michael Coleman and James Morrison. The Paddy Killoran Trad Festival is held on the last weekend in June, in Ballymote Co. Sligo. In 2012 the branch name was changed to Craobh Paddy Killoran.
