ComhaltasLive #222: Munster Fleadh 2007 (Full Programme)

Programme 222: Music from the Munster Fleadh Cheoil in Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick in July 2007.

Time Segment
00:00 Selection of jigs ending with “Hinchy’s Delight”, played in the Munster Senior Céilí Band competition by Ceoltóirí na Mainstreach from Ennis, Co. Clare. The band won 2nd place. Note that all bands have to play 4 selections.
02:41 The competition was won by the Allow Céilí Band from Co. Cork, who played this selection of reels. Recorded at the 2007 Munster Fleadh.
05:04 The Awbeg Céilí Band from Cappamore/Murroe CCÉ took 3rd place in the competition and included these two 3-part jigs in their selections. The second jig is “The New House”, composed in the 1960s by Paddy O’Brien. Paddy actually composed the tune in the key of ‘C’ and note in particular his very tasty use of the Bb note in the fist bar of the second part.
08:31 One of the highlights of the 2007 Munster Fleadh was the concert which featured many of the great West Limerick artists from over the decades. The famous Seán Ó Sé was “Fear a’ Tí” for the night and here he introduces one of West Limerick’s outstanding flute players: Francis O’Connor from Ardagh. Francis plays two reels - the first he learned from the playing of Paddy Taylor and the second he associates with Co. Sligo.
11:53 Accordion player Dónal Murphy from Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick is well-known as a member of the group “4 Men And A Dog”, which also includes Gerry ‘Banjo’ O’Connor. Together with banjo player John Larkin from Templeglantine, Dónal plays a selection of reels: “Seán Ryan’s”, “Tear the Calico” and “The Sailor’s Bonnet”.
16:34 Many of West Limerick’s musicians are featured in the Templeglantine Céilí Band, including fiddle player Aine O’Connor, wife of Francis O’Connor featured earlier in the programme. Another member of the band who played this hornpipe is Síobhán Ní Chonnaráin who has produced many Comhaltas tour concerts in recent years.
18:30 We conclude the programme with a selection of reels, “Lucy Campbell’s” and “Music in the Glen” played by the Arrabawn Céilí Band from Ballycommon, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.
