This week, more music from the Munster Fleadh Cheoil in Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick in July 2007. Apologies to our regular viewers for the lag in updates lately - we’ve been shuffling some things internally, and we’re just getting back on schedule.
Time | Segment 00:00 | Maker of the very popular ‘Clareen’ banjo and stalwart of the famous Shaskeen Céilí Band, Tom Cussen plays a selection of reels - “Love at the Endings” composed by Ed Reavy and “The Chicago Reel”. Piano accompaniament is by Aileen Dillane. Both and Aileen are from West Limerick, although Tom and has been living for many years in Co. Galway. 02:56 | In the Sr. Céilí Band competition at this year’s Munster Fleadh Cheoil, the Cluain Chreadail Ceílí Band from Limerick played “Cooley’s Hornpipe” composed by Paddy O’Brien in the 1940s. 04:34 | The Senior. Céilí Band competition at the 2007 Munster Fleadh was won by the Allow Céilí Band from Co. Cork, who played this selection of jigs. Note that bands are adjudicated on four different selections. 07:13 | The Awbeg Céilí Band from Co. Limerick took 3rd place in the 2007 Munster Fleadh and played this selection of reels. They concluded with another Paddy O’Brien composition called “Hanly’s Tweed”. 09:29 | From Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick, Donal Murphy is the accordionist with the popular group “4 Men And A Dog”. Together with banjo player John Larkin from Templeglantine, he plays a selection of three jigs: “The Rose in the Heather”, “The Rambler”, and “Baile Beag”. 13:29 | Selection of jigs played by the Arrabaw Céilí Band from Ballycommon, Co. Tipperary at the 2007 Munster Fleadh. 16:37 | Ceoltóirí na Mainistreach from Ennis, Co. Clare, who played this selection of reels, took 2nd place in the Senior Céilí Band competition at the 2007 Munster Fleadh. Together with the Allow Céilí Band, they proceeded to the All-Ireland at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore, Co. Offaly.
