ComhaltasLive #254 - 2: Barn dances played by the Mac Gabhann family

A selection of barn dances played by Antón Mac Gabhann, the organiser of the annual Mullahoran concert, Co. Cavan on fiddle, together with his family: Caitlín on concertina, Bernadette on fiddle and Seán on button accordion. The first tune, “The New Broom”, was composed by East Galway flute player Vincent Broderíck, who has been living in Dublin for many years where he is a member of the Cumann na bPíobairí Uileann branch of Comhaltas. The tune is also this week’s tutorial. The second tune is called “If There Weren’t Any Women in the World”.

Both tunes are included in Foinn Seisiún Book 3, which is a compilation of 108 session tunes put together into sets by fiddle payer Brian Prior and published by Comhaltas in 2007. Books 1, 2 and 3 are available from Comhaltas at http://comhaltas.ie/shop, and CDs are now available to accompany books 1 & 2. The CD to accompany Book 3 is underway, and will be released at Fleadh Nua in Ennis in May, 2008.
