This week we present excerpts from the Tutors’ Concert at Scoil Éigse, held at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore in August 2008. We feature the playing of Finbar McGreevy (flute), Fiona Doherty (fiddle), Cian Kearns (flute), Jarlath Brennan (banjo), John Burke (fiddle) and Carmel Burke (button accordion), Dean Warner (piano accordion), Noel Kilkenny (banjo), Paula McMahon (fiddle), Josephine Nugent (fiddle), Mickey Smith (uilleann pipes), Niall Keegan (flute), Gary Lynch (fiddle) and Peter Staunton (button accordion).

00:00 This week we bring you music from the tutors’ concert at Scoil Éigse, held at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore in August 2008. Scoil Éigse attendance reached a record level of over 800 students this year. Here is a selection of three reels played by tutors Finbar McGreevy on flute from Co. Roscommon and Fiona Doherty on fiddle from Sligo. The reels are: “The Hare’s Paw”, “The Cup of Tea” and “Jimmy McGettrick’s”.
04:12 Cian Kearns on flute and Jarlath Brennan on banjo, both from Co. Sligo, are joined by John and Carmel Burke from Coventry, England on fiddle and accordion for the 2008 Scoil Éigse tutors’ concert. Together they play “Pearl O’Shaughnessy’s Barn Dance.”
07:26 Three jigs: “The Kings of Innisboffin” composed by Charlie Lennon, “The Haunted House” by Vincent Broderick and “Josie’s Visit” by Brendan Tonra, played by Dean Warner (piano accordion) originally from Leeds, England and now living in Co. Armagh, and Noel Kilkenny (banjo) from Co. Mayo. The music was recorded at the tutors’ concert at Scoil Éigse, held at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore in August 2008.
11:17 Two Co. Clare fiddle players, Paula McMahon and Josephine Nugent, now living in Cambridge, England are joined by Dublin piper Mickey Smith for two jigs: “Pat Ward’s” and “Munster Buttermilk”.
15:51 Next we present three more of the seventy tutors at Scoil Éigse 2008: Niall Keegan from the University of Limerick on flute, Gary Lynch from Co. Fermanagh on fiddle and Peter Staunton from Dublin on button accordion. They play a set of reels: “Morning Star”, “Love at the Endings” composed by Ed Reavy, which is this week’s tutorial, and then “Morning Star” in a different key.
