ComhaltasLive #349 (Full Programme)



Comhaltas, celebrating its 60th anniversary, organised concerts featuring All-Ireland Champions on Fiddle and Button Accordion from 1951 to 1980 on the 29th and 30th of April 2011 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. This programme features some of those Champions as well as mucis from Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2001 in Listowel.

00:00 All-Ireland Champion on Button Accordion for 1959 and 1960 Joe Burke plays a selection of reels: “The Flogging Reel” and “The Pigeon on the Gate” at the special concert of All-Ireland Champions in Tullamore, Co. Offally on the 29th and 30th of April 2011. Guitar accompaniment is by Ann Conroy Burke.
03:58 John Bowe, originally from Co. Offaly and living for many years in London, plays a selection of jigs at the Concert of All-Ireland Champions 1951-1980 in Tullamore on the 29th of April, 2011. John was All-Ireland Champion for 1963 and plays “First Night in America” and “The Coming of Spring” (composed by Paddy O’Brien). Guitar accompaniment is by John O’Connor.
06:53 Cáit Ní Chuis from Hospital, Co. Limerick was All-Ireland Fiddle Champion in 1960 and played this Air - “The Lament for Limerick” - at the Special Concert for All-Ireland Champions in Tullamore on 30th of April, 2011.
10:26 Antóin Mac Gabhann from Co. Cavan was All-Ireland Fiddle Champion in 1971 and 1972 and played this selection of jigs at the Special Comhaltas Concert of Fiddle Champions in Tullamore on the 30th of April, 2011. The jigs are “Frank Burke’s” (fiddle player in Chacago, USA) and “You’re Welcome Says Maureen and Hugh” (composed by Antóin in honour of his late brother Hugh in New York, USA).
13:10 From Co. Clare, Vincent Griffin was All-Ireland Fiddle Champion in 1974 and played this selection of reels commencing with “Maudabawn Chapel” by Ed Reavy at the Comhaltas Special Concert of Fiddle Champions 1980 in Tullamore on 30th of April, 2011. Piano accompaniment was by Eileen O’Brien.
15:31 Taking Third Place at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2001 in Listowel, Co. Kerry the Móinín Céilí Band from Roscrea, Co. Tipperary played this selection of reels: “The Bird in the Bush” and “Hanly’s Tweed” (by Paddy O’Brien).
18:06 Hornpipe played by The Broken Pledge Céílí Band at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2001 in Listowel, Co. Kerry.
