A fiddle duet by Rose Flanagan and Dylan Foley from New York, with guitar accompaniament by Donal Clancy, son of the legendary Liam Clancy of the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem. They play two reels: “The Lads of Laois” and “The First Month of Summer” which is this week’s tutorial. Dylan learned his music from Rose and her brother Brian Conway. At the end of the selection we see Donal’s wife Mary and their two young children together with Mary’s father, the legendary Mike Rafferty, who emigrated from his native East Galway in 1949.

Here is a set of reels from Cruinniú, recorded at the Nyah Festival in Cavan in March 2007. The first two reels, composed by Vincent Broderick, are “The Milky Way” and “The Crock of Gold” which is this weeks’ tutorial. The third reel is “The Green Mountain”.
The 2008 Nyah Festival, spearheaded by accordionist Martin Donohoe, runs during March at various centres around county Cavan.

Co. Armagh fiddle player Erin McGeown plays a selection of three reels, accompanied on guitar by Deirdre Murray of Toome, Co. Antrim. The first one Erin learned from the playing of Fiddlesticks, the second is a version of “The Mason’s Apron” and the third reel is a setting of “The Maid Behind the Bar”.

A hornpipe followed by two reels, played by the West Limerick flute player Michael King who also has featured on Comhaltas concert tours. (Incidentally, the Comhaltas Tour of Britain took the road on Feb 23rd.)
Michael plays “The Stage Hornpipe” followed by two reels, the first one learned from Garry Shannon, and the second “The Braes of Busby”. Guitar accompaniment is by Sean Leahy from Dún Chaoin, Co. Kerry.

A ComhaltasLive favourite, here is one of the big street sessions at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2007 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. This session is led by banjo player Mick O’Connor from London and accordionist Oliver Diviney from Galway. Adding to the international dimension is guitar player Tony O’ Rourke from Melbourne, Australia. The reels include: “Bell Harbour”, “The Flax in Bloom” and “Come West Along the Road”.
