Aonach Paddy O'Brien

August 13th - 19th, 1997

Aonach Paddy O’Brien

The late Paddy O’Brien, whose music the Aonach celebrates each year, is revered not only in his native Tipperary and Ireland but also among traditional music enthusiasts in Britain, North America and Australia. This must surely be seen as a major achievement in any area of the arts. The music - both style and composition - of the Tipperary legendary accordeonist now has a huge following in the world of native music.’ This was stated by Labhrás Ó Murchú, Ardstiúrthóir of Comhaltas, when he officially launched the Aonach at a Press function in Nenagh. This excellent event, which has a most impressive and extensive programme, will be held in Nenagh on the 13th- 19th August.

The Ardstiúrthóir stated that it was the quality and vitality of Irish traditional music itself combined with the commitment, perseverance and virtuosity of its exponents that made it possible for our music to gain in stature and popularity through the transition from the country kitchen to the many and diverse settings in which it may be found today. With the formation of new branches of Comhaltas in Nuremberg, Budapest and Milan, the cultural movement continues to grow and expand throughout the world. The evergrowing network of branches, in excess of 400 with their diverse programme of activities, continues to spread the knowledge and appreciation of our cultural traditions. Participation is not confined to those of Irish descent. Our branches in such places as Sardinia and Tokyo are further fine examples of the world fraternity of Comhaltas.
