Spring 2001

The RTE television programme Léargas captured the guiding spirit of Comhaltas from the early years to the present day. Here was all the idealism, enthusiasm, artistry and camaraderie which make Comhaltas what it is today - a vibrant and successful movement at home and abroad.

On January 26 2001, the first Comhaltas event of its 50th anniversary celebrations was held at the historic 14 Thomas Street, Dublin. This was the former home of the Pipers’ Club who spearheaded the founding of Comhaltas.

On the weekend of February 23, the founding of Comhaltas in Mullingar in 1951 was celebrated. There was an extensive programme of activities including a Civic Reception accorded by the local authority.

RTE’s Peter Browne and Kieran Hanrahan have been capturing the memories and the melodies for the radio listeners from the many commemorative events. Pride and nostalgia are in the air as we celebrate 50 BLIAIN AG FÁS.
