Winter 2002
Eagarfhocal
It is estimated that there are 40 million people of Irish extractin in North America. Add this to the millions in Britain and other parts of the world and the extent and potential of the Irish Diaspora are evident. This global Irish community is a source for our relatively small country.
Our Diaspora faces many challenges in a fast changing world. With less emigration from Ireland, the mantle of nationhood has been passed on to possibly second and third generation Irish. Many of these will have visited the homeland but most of them probably have not been to Ireland.
The North America Convention of Comhaltas in Boston next April will identify and address the challenges now facing our people outside the shores of Ireland. This is a timely development as part of the ATHNUACHAN (Renewal) plans of Comhaltas which are being formulated and driven by MEITHEAL (the helpers at harvest time).
