Below are the newly composed tunes which were placed at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2023 in Mullingar.

The Mullinalaghta Shout

This reel composed by Aoibhínn Ní Loinsigh from CCÉ, John Dungan in Longford was awarded 1st place in the newly composed tune competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Mullingar. The reel is named after Mullinalaghta where Aoibhínn was born and raised. It is a small half parish in north Co. Longford with a population of only 400 people.

Maggie Scotts Hornpipe

Taking 2nd place in the newly composed tune competition was ‘Maggie Scott’s Hornpipe’ composed by Sligo’s Jason McGuinness. Jason represents the Tireragh branch in Sligo and wrote this tune for his grandmother (Mum’s side) 90th birthday. Jason composed this hornpipe because his granny loved going to dances and was always a big supporter of music, song and dance going to many fleadhanna ceoil including Sligo, Connacht and All Ireland. 

Port na hUamhanna   

‘Port na hUamhanna’, a jig composed by Éabha Ní Mhurchú from Craobh Niall Ó Cathasaigh Baile an Chollaigh, in Cork took 3rd place in the newly composed tune competition. Na hUamhanna the Irish for ‘Ovens’ is the parish in Cork where Éabha lives. The name translates to ‘the caves’ which run through the valley in the area.
