Comhaltas Annual Congress 2009
The Comhaltas Annual Congress 2009 took place in Monkstown, County Dublin over the weekend of 1st to 3rd May. Delegates from most of the 415 branches of Comhaltas worldwide converged on Cultúrlann na hÉireann for a weekend of lively debates, the election of Officers plus lots of ceol, damhsa, amhrán agus craic.
Comhaltas Ardstiúrthóir, Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú welcomed the delegates to Congress and appraised them of the major advances which had taken place within the movement in recent years. Much of these resulted from the innovative and ambitious Comhaltas Development Programme implemented with significant Government financial support. This Athnuachcan Programme has consolidated the momentous achievements of Comhaltas during its first 50 years that were celebrated in 2001, the Golden jubilee year, and has expanded the scope of the movement through the development of seven Regional Resource Centres supported by nine outreach centres plus a host of other initiatives introduced by way of the new Regional Meitheal teams.
The weekend also saw the election of Comhaltas national officers. Particular congratulations are extended to Sligo”s Séamus MacCormaic who was elected as Comhaltas Uachtarán for the next three years.
