Andy Irvine at Mill Theatre, Dundrum

As part of this year’s Leinster Fleadh another great concert has been planned for Wednesday, 9th July in the Mill Theatre, Dundrum starring folk legend, Andy Irvine.

Singer, songwriter and gifted musician, Andy Irvine is one of those few folk style guitarists to become a legend in their own lifetimes. He also plays harmonica, mandolin, mandola, bouzouki and hurdy-gurdy.

Andy started his musical career back in the 1960s playing Dublin’s folk scene with such artists as Johnny Moynihan, Ronnie Drew and Luke Kelly. In 1966 he joined Sweeney’s Men who recorded an album and some hit singles (who doesn’t remember “The Old Maid in The Garret”?).

In 1972 Andy founded legendary trad group, Planxty along with Christy Moore, Donal Lunny and Liam O’Flynn. This was one of the most influential groups ever to emerge from Ireland’s traditional scene who, in a few short years, went on to become internationally renowned.

When Planxty broke up in 1975, Andy teamed up with Paul Brady. This partnership resulted in a best selling album and their own series on BBC TV plus a series of critically acclaimed concerts, including the 1977 Cambridge Folk Festival.

Planxty re-formed in 1979 but split again in 1983. Andy then formed the group, Mosaic, whose members hailed from Ireland, Denmark, Holland and Hungary. This group lasted for 3 years and in 1986 Patrick Street was formed with Kevin Burke, Jackie Daly and Gerry O’Beirne. This group has proved very successful and Andy has done a number of tours and albums with them.

Andy once again joined Planxty in 2004 for a series of Irish concerts and a new live CD and DVD. Currently he devotes most of his time to song writing and touring solo, with annual tours of the US, Australia and the UK.

All lovers of traditional guitar are urged to come along to the mill Theatre, Dundrum on Wednesday, 9th July for what promises to be an unforgettable night of music and nostalgia.
