‘Teach Cheoil Chill Rois’ serves as an outreach centre to Cois na hAbhna, the Comhaltas Regional Resource Centre in Ennis. The 140-seater Teach Cheoil, which opened in Summer 2007, occupies the former St. Senan’s Church of Ireland building in Kilrush and is home to live traditional music performances, seisiún shows, educational events, lectures and exhibitions.
Early in 2007, Kilrush Community Development Ltd signed over the lease of St. Senan’s Church to Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. Comhaltas have undertaken to respect the integrity of the building and an example of this includes the restoration of the numerous and magnificent stain glass windows in the building. It’s equally important to ensure that the facility will be embraced by the local community of Kilrush and West Clare, and that appropriate community groups will have access to it. The local branch of Comhaltas, ‘Inis Cathaigh Chill Rois’ will provide opportunities for networking and linkages with other Comhaltas centres around the county”.
An “Open Evening” was held at the Teach Cheoil on Wednesday June 27th. More than twenty musicians , singers and dancers from Kilrush, Kilkee, Ennis, Ennistymon and Tulla provided entertainment on the night and received a standing ovation from a most enthusiastic audience. Among the the performers was veteran Miltown musician, Michael Falsey, All-Ireland winning uilleann piper, flute and whistle player. Michael delighted the audience with his singing of “Kilrush Town”.
Seisiún shows take place in Teach Cheoil Chill Rois each Wednesday throughout the months of July and August starting at 9.00pm each night.
