Roscommon County Fleadh 2008

Roscommon County Fleadh, 2008, Athleague

The weather forecasters warned of high winds, snow and hail but in fact the sun shone on Athleague and the Roscommon County Fleadh organised by Athleague Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann over the Easter week-end.

Ath-Liag – the Ford of the Flagstones – is a wonderful town for a County Fleadh. Its been ten years since the Fleadh was last held in Athleague and as it’s the first Fleadh of the season the hard-working Athleague committee set about ensuring the success of the week-end. They had a full programme of events with Saturday designated a family day with a vintage rally, craft fair, art competition. Sunday saw the official opening with special guest former County Hurling Board Secretary Johnny Haughey. The Raheen Traditional Group from Offaly entertained the crowds after the opening and there was a wonderful concert in the community centre at 7.30 pm with the best in traditional music from around the county taking part. The night finished with a ceili in the Bridge House with the Anally Ceili Band.

The important part of the week-end i.e. the competitions took place on Monday with a big attendance in all competitions and there were wonderful sessions in local pubs throughout the week-end. All in all a very successful Roscommon County Fleadh and well done Athleague. PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE WEEK-END CAN BE VIEWED ON THE IRELAND-CONNAUGHT PAGE OF THIS WEBSITE.
