Roscommon History

– The first Co. Board of Comhaltas in Co. Roscommon was established in 1954 - just three years after the founding of the Parent Body in Mullingar in 1951. County Roscommon is a county steeped in traditional culture and is noted, with South Sligo and Leitrim, for its distinctive style of flute playing to the present day.

There are well-established branches throughout the county, all actively engaged in the promotion of various Comhaltas activities, including Pléaracha and Scoraíocht. In the ‘Ceoltraí’ competition, which has been discontinued, Co. Roscommon teams won four National titles in three years - a feat unequalled by any other.

Roscommon Co. Fleadh Cheoil has traditionally been held during Easter Weekend, is the first fleadh of the year in Ireland and generally speaking despite the sometimes adverse weather conditions at that time of year, is attended by large crowds, especially from Northern Ireland and Dublin.
