This week we present some of the fine Céilí Bands competing at the 2008 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore, including the Sruleen, Beartla Ó Flatharta, Awbeg, Allow, Naithí, Innisfree and the St. Roch’s Céilí Bands.

00:00 From the Senior Céilí Band competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2008 in Tullamore, we have the Sruleen Céilí Band from CCÉ South Birmingham in Britain. They play a set of reels, concluding with “Miss McDonald”. Band members are: Katie Jordan (drums), Carmel Burke (button accordion), Eilish Cummins (piano), Vince Jordan (piano accordion), John Burke (fiddle), Doreen Davis (fiddle), Helen Gillespie (fiddle), Anna Marie Jordan (fiddle), Celestine Boyle (fiddle) and Joanna Hocking (flute).

Band members are: Maireád Fitzgibbon, Tara Breen and Aileen O’Callaghan, fiddles; Siobhán Hogan and Eamon Moloney, flutes; Brendan Clancy, banjo; Rory McMahon, concertina; Alan Finn, button accordion; Francis Ward, piano and Noel Clancy on drums.
09:07 The Allow Céilí Band from Co. Cork play a set of jigs, concluding with “The Luck Penny”, which is this week’s tutorial. The band were All-Ireland champions in 2007. This selection was recorded at the 2008 Senior Céilí Band competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore. Band members are: Meabh Buckley, Geraldine O’Callaghan, Aine O’Connel, fiddles; Gerry Nunan and William Pierse, flutes; John Carroll, accordion; Adrian McAuliffe, banjo; Eimear Buckley, concertina; Clodagh Buckley, piano and Pat Mulcahy on drums.
11:56 The Naithí Céilí Band from Dublin plays a set of reels at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2008. Band members are: Claire Walsh, Mick Glynn and Emma Woods, fiddle; Brendan McCabe and Sarah Jane Woods, flute; Aoife Johnston and Peter Denmead, concertina; Philip Denmead, button accordion; Martin Gaffney, piano and Martin Dodd on drums.

This selection was recorded at the 2008 Senior Céilí Band competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore. Band members are: Cormac Mac Diarmada, Damian O’Brien and Oisín Mac Diarmada, fiddles; Máire Nic Dhiarmada Finbar McGreevy and David Sheridan, flutes; Paul Finn, button accordion; Oliver Loughlin, piano accordion; Charles O’Connor, piano and Daragh Kelly on drums.
16:27 St. Roch’s Céilí Band from Glasgow, Scotland with a selection of reels, commencing with “The Salamanca”. This selection was recorded at the 2008 Senior Céilí Band competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore. Band members are: Louise Hunter, Eileen McArdle, Johnny Canning and Katie Boyle, fiddles; Mairéad McManus and Julia Reid, flute; Martina Callaghan, piano accordion; Paddy Callaghan, button accordion; Kathleen Boyle, piano and Mark Maguire on drums.
